    Thanks all!

I was thinking of making one from Sunbrella and firing up the Sailrite for yet another project but in the interim, this is easier and much less expensive than the Sunbrella.

I have “glassed” a lot of things over the years.  We did the one step and while it worked ok, doing it in two or better yet three steps will yield a better product IMHO.

Now let me back that up with why I think so…

Do the top first.  Let it cure overnight.

Pick a side then rest it on half the mold.  Save pieces and create two sides as halves.

Once that side is done, 180 it after an overnight cure and do the other side.

Why?  One word – gravity.  Epoxy tends to self level.  By placing the working surface more horizontal you get less runs.  More so you can also work with the glass in sections and that makes a HUGE improvement.  When we did the bottom and transom it came out far better.

Here is an extra hint – use tape to define the edges of the glass, bring the fabric just over the edge and then cut after it starts to cure and remove the tape, then wipe with denatured alcohol and a toss away rag.  the overall finish will look more pro and be a LOT easier when it comes time to sand nad varnish.

This is what we are thinking and will be one of a number of projects this Summer between the CLCTD and Otters Nest.

Our LSZ1 is gonna get a workout!  lol

FWIW – we are planning on a number of canvas ( read Sunbrella ) items for our TD including side panels for the galley.  Would love to see others that have done such things.

    Don,

    Thanks for the reply.

I was wondering about structural issues with the windows overall.  Further thoughts would be adding a small aluminum “L” beam inside over and under the windows.  This would provide curtain mounts and structural support at the same time.

The dual smaller windows is a great idea too.  This was done in the salon of our sailboat with two 7X15 portlights per side verusus a 7 X36 single run.  Besides the ability to open, it does add structure.   I will look at two smaller windows as an option too.

We will order the base kit around May 1.

    Thanks,

    Scott and Sara SVOTTERSNEST

PS – we picked the tow vehicle – Retro Ford Thunderbird in T-Bird Blue, will paint trailer base to match the car.  No idea till she saw it and I quote “That’s the most adorable car I have ever seen.”

We are in the planning stages and thought the idea of the box like SOMDTD had was a great idea, that and a small box in front of it for a pair of type 27 batteries.
